Science
Statement of Intent
At Smithy Bridge we recognise the importance of Science in everyday life and the role it plays in the future. By following the national curriculum for Science we aim to:
· develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
· develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
· equip children with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.
For children, Science is the study of the physical world involving observations, physical experiment and working scientifically via investigations involving prediction, observation, testing and evaluation. Children will actively learn by thinking of their own questions and developing their own ideas.
Working scientifically is embedded in each programme of study that we teach so that pupils learn to use a variety of approaches to answer relevant scientific questions.
Types of scientific enquiry include: observing over time; pattern seeking; identifying, classifying and grouping; comparative and fair testing (controlled investigations) and researching secondary sources.
Implementation:
Science is taught weekly as a discrete subject from Year 1 to Year 6 following the programmes of study from the national curriculum. At EYFS Science is taught via ‘Understanding of the World’.
Teaching staff use the national curriculum guidelines to plan engaging lessons that promote curiosity. Teachers demonstrate how to use scientific equipment, and the various ‘working scientifically’ skills in order to embed scientific understanding. Teachers find opportunities to develop children’s understanding of their surroundings by accessing outdoor learning and workshops with experts and visitors.
We are members of the Association of Science Education and use the resources to plan and inform teaching and assessment. We are also part of the Rochdale Science Leader’s Network.
Design and Technology is a subject that we make firm curriculum links with, and each year group undertakes a DT project linked to science. For example: Year 3 design and make magnet games, Year 6 design and make periscopes.
